What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the energy of being aware and awake to the present moment. It is the continuous practice of touching life deeply in every moment of daily life. To be mindful is to be truly alive, present and at one with those around you and with what you are doing. We bring our body and mind into harmony while we wash the dishes, drive the car or take our morning shower. We also practice formal ‘sitting meditation’ and walking meditation (slow walking) to help us cultivate the energy of mindfulness so to bring this energy with us into our everyday activities.

Sometimes called moment-to-moment awareness, mindfulness helps us to come back to ourselves calm our emotions, be peaceful, happy and more able to deal with all that daily life throws at us.

In practicing together as a Sangha, our practice of mindfulness becomes more joyful, relaxed and steady. We support and remind each other along the path of practice. With the support of the community, we can practice to cultivate peace and joy within and around us, as a gift for all of those whom we love and care for. We can cultivate our solidity and freedom – solid in our deepest aspiration and free from fears, misunderstandings and our suffering.

Where can I learn to meditate?

There are many types of meditation. To learn to practice mindfulness meditation, you might attend a Sangha, Plum Village or have a look at the links page for access to free recourses.

Is there a Sangha in my area I could join?

There may be a Sangha in your local area, check the Sangha page by clicking here. If there is, contact the person directly (number given) to attend. If there is no Sangha in your local area, consider setting up a group. If you need help with this, please feel free to contact Mindfulness Ireland.
